Fixins Soul Kitchen Detroit: Reviews & Ratings
Our visit to Fixin's Soul was fantastic! CJ and her staff provided exceptional service. The food arrived promptly and tasted incredible, from presentation to flavor. The atmosphere was great, and the bathrooms were impressively clean. Will definitely return! #FixinsSoul #DetroitDining #5StarService #CulinaryDelight #CleanAndInviting
Delicious!!!! Very packed as expected, but wait time was reasonable and worth the food. I loved that most of the cocktails had infused ice cubes- very neat. As a girl born and raised in the south, I appreciate true soul food. Service was warm & attentive. I especially enjoyed all of the artwork paying homage to several famous black artists of several industries. Would def return.
Absolutely amazing food!!! Service was outstanding!!! Our server Taylor was amazing and so much fun and enjoyable!!! The owner was walking around checking on customers ensuring a good experience!!! Owner just happened to be from Sacramento California and I am from Stockton... Nice to chat with another Northern California brother! Oh yeah, Kevin Johnson is the owner... Phoenix Suns All Star guard!!!
This restaurant has become one of my favorites! After my first visit, the food was absolutely delicious and customer service was absolutely great! I ended up telling my family about it, and a few weeks after I took my parents and siblings for a visit and they loved it as well. On our second visit it was yet again great customer service and amazing food!
My recent visit to Fixins in Detroit left me with mixed feelings. While the food itself was undeniably great, certain aspects of the experience, particularly the service, unfortunately detracted from our overall enjoyment. The flavors coming out of the kitchen at Fixins were truly impressive. Each dish we ordered was well-executed and flavorful. However, our party was seated in the lounge area rather than the main dining room, which immediately felt less immersive and a bit removed from the restaurant's vibrant atmosphere. More significantly, the service we received was subpar. Our server seemed inattentive, and we often felt ignored. Simple requests took longer than expected, and it was difficult to get their attention when needed. The most glaring issues were that a fried green tomato appetizer never arrived, and an order of gumbo for one of our guests did not arrive with the rest of our meals. We waited patiently, assuming it was just a slight delay, but after a considerable amount of time, we had to flag down another waitress to inquire about it. The gumbo finally arrived approximately 15 minutes later. To their credit, the late gumbo was removed from our bill, which was an appropriate gesture. However, the delay and the feeling of being overlooked definitely soured our experience, especially for our friends who were visiting from out of town. What should have been a showcase of Detroit's culinary scene was unfortunately marred by the inconsistent service. While I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Fixins based on the quality and taste of their food alone, potential diners should be aware that their seating location and the attentiveness of the service might vary. Hopefully, the restaurant can address these inconsistencies to ensure a more uniformly positive experience for all guests.
Decided to give this place a try. The service was good. I didn’t care for the fish or cornbread balls. It does not taste like catfish due to the texture or it may have just been under fried. Texture was a bit mushy. Wife had the smothered pork chops and they were fire. Fried green tomatoes were good and the sauce was amazing. Drinks were very good and our waiter was very good. Atmosphere was nice.
I’ve been to FSK-Detroit three times since June 2025. I’ve had the fried chicken (once), and the fish dinner (twice). My favorite sides are mac&cheese and candied yams, and they are always on point! The Langston lavender lemon drop is delicious! I’ve also tried the Nearest Nash (I may have name wrong) but that’s the type of drink that sneaks up on you. The food is very well seasoned, the staff are professional and very friendly, and the atmosphere is so chill. The ONLY reason I did not give 5 stars for the food is because the meats I’ve had have been extremely greasy. I’m sure that’s an easy remedy. Also, you all maybe wondering why I put on average $50-$100 for one person and that’s because I’ve ordered alcoholic beverages. If you’re price conscious, please don’t be deterred from patronizing this establishment. On my next visit, I’m going to try their oxtails!
I've had a lot of soul food since moving to town and most of it I would classify as "okay." I'm not an expert, but I understand the basics. Fixins was another another level, however. Generous portions and everything was packed with flavor. I easily had enough to take home for a second meal. We didn't have a reservation, but we were accommodated rather quickly (I'm under the impression that reservations are preferred). Service was quick and friendly. The fried green tomatoes appetizer was the standout! My fried chicken was excellent too. Seasoning was on point and the chicken was juicy. My only nitpick was the space is a bit loud. Blasting music isn't really necessary when the acoustics don't dampen the noise at all.
